If you’re looking for abstract images to use in creative media, few techniques beat the effect of bokeh.

Defined briefly as “the visual quality of the out-of-focus areas of a photographic image, especially as rendered by a particular lens”, bokeh is the go-to result of certain lighting conditions with the right lens.

To get these shots, I used a 50mm prime set on f1.8 along with a tangled mess of Christmas lights sitting on a clothes airer. All you need to do is switch the room lights off along with the camera’s autofocus and make the shot as out of focus as possible, and you’ll create some beautiful effects.

Abstractions can be used in blog posts to add interest/colour without detracting from the content or used to overlay other images.
